A root canal is a treatment used to save a tooth that is badly decayed and/or infected. Nerve and pulp, the soft area within the center of the tooth, can become irritated, inflamed, and infected due to deep decay, repeated dental procedures on a tooth, large fillings, a crack or chip in the tooth, or trauma to the face. During a root canal procedure, the nerve and pulp is removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed.
Root canal procedures have the reputation of being painful. In reality, most patients report that the procedure itself is no more painful than having a filling placed. The discomfort experienced in the period leading up to dental care is truly the painful period of time, not the root canal procedure itself.
The root canal procedure should relieve the pain you feel. Until your root canal procedure is completely finished – that is to say, the permanent filling is in place and/or the crown is placed, it is wise to minimize chewing on the tooth under repair. This step will help avoid re-contamination of the interior of the tooth and also may prevent a fragile tooth from breaking before the tooth can be fully restored. For the first few days following completion of treatment, the tooth may feel sensitive due to natural tissue inflammation, especially if there was pain or infection before the procedure.
As far as oral health care is concerned, brush and floss as you regularly would and see your dentist at normally scheduled intervals. The final step of the root canal procedure is application of a restoration such as a crown, to cover and protect the tooth.

If you desire excellence in formulating a dental treatment plan and skilled execution of that plan, you can do no better than Dr. Brian Hoffman, DMD. During a course of multiple treatment sessions which included a surgical extraction, a root canal and three crowns, I experienced no discomfort, much less any pain during pre-treatment, during the procedures, or post-treatment. If there is a Mecca for painless dentistry, it will be found in Dr. Hoffman's practice. Furthermore, his support staff are not only extremely competent but show genuine consideration for the patient's comfort and wellbeing. I recommend this dental practice without reservation. *5 stars* All the staff at Hoffman Dental are great and pleasant to talk to. They make you feel welcome right from the moment you come in. The doctor is amazing. A little bit of perfectionist, but who doesn't want to have a doctor that takes pride of their great work. I just recently finished my invisalign treatment and I couldn't be happier. My teeth look amazing. I also had a root canal and fillings done by doctor Hoffman. I never had any pain or problems after he did those things, that wasn't the case for my previous dentist. I strongly recommend doctor Hoffman to anyone looking to get any dental work done. He is a great dentist and person all around, and did I mentioned that his staff is also great, they will keep you laughing the entire time you are there.
We were on vacation when we called Dr. Hoffman's office about mouth pain from a root canal performed in NJ. Got an immediate appointment. Doctor Hoffman was thorough and professional. Diagnosed a continued bone infection combined with a leaking root canal and PERMANENT cap installed months earlier. One appointment later repaired the infection and botched root canal. Dr. Hoffman's temp cap was in place until he was sure the infection was gone, then he built on site a perfect permanent cap to finish the procedure. He spent all day on my honey's smile. Was it cheap? No, but we will tell you this. It was cheaper than the botched cap job charges from our NJ dentist and the orthodontics referral mill they sent us to. Everyone was great. THey helped with a credit option. None of any dental work was covered by our insurance and we are still paying it down. CHeap might be good when getting gas or tuna fish. Don't expect cheap when sick. Look for quality reviews like we did when on vacation. DO it right once. It will cost you half as much in the long run. Don't shoot the messenger for your health or your loved one's, you will be lonely or worse. Thanks Hoffman Dental.
